Vascular calcifications of the arteries, especially of the limbs, essentially lead to a narrowing within the diameter of the vessels and&nbsp; to a reduced blood circulation and peripherally, to a lack of oxygen. Occlusion of an arterial blood vessel leads to clinical presentations such as myocardial infarction due to occlusion of the coronary arteries and stroke due to occlusion of the cerebral arteries.

On the lower limbs, the primary vascular disease is also atherosclerosis, and the abbreviation PAD (= peripheral arterial disease) is often found in the literature. This article deals with the differences between men and women with regard to the disease PAD. Therapeutic options and results are discussed on the basis of various studies.
